Do what now?

Many times there are directions that make perfect sense to someone who is a great chef or cooks all the time... but not everyone is. This is the thread to ask what the heck something is, or what it means etc.
For example:
What is a ROUX? And why am I adding it to whatever...
Someone would reply: A roux is basically a mix of butter and flour and is used to thicken sauces and soups etc. Then maybe they would go into how to make it or whatever...
